Clearing and Protection as Sacred Hygiene

Plant Allies traditionally used for grounding, clearing and energetic protection

Just as our physical body needs care, our subtle body also needs tending.

In the ancient understanding of the human being, we are not only made of flesh, bone and breath. We are also surrounded and interwoven by a luminous field of subtle energy — often called the aura, or the energy field.

This field is the sacred atmosphere of the self. It is the unseen layer through which we sense the world, receive guidance, exchange energy with others and perceive what cannot always be spoken.

When this field is clear, we may feel centred, present, intuitive and connected to our own inner light. When it becomes heavy, porous or clouded, we may feel drained, scattered, overwhelmed, anxious, or as though we are carrying something that does not belong to us.

After holding space for others, sitting with grief, moving through crowds, working with clients, engaging in healing practices or navigating emotionally intense environments, the aura can absorb impressions from what it has encountered.

This is why cleansing, grounding and protection have always been part of spiritual practice.

Energetic protection is not about believing the world is dangerous. It is about remembering that the subtle body is sacred, receptive and alive — and therefore deserving of care.

Particularly in these days, when we are constantly exposed to dense environments, emotional exchanges, digital overstimulation and collective stress, energetic hygiene is essential.

It helps us return to centre.
It helps us know what is ours and what is not.
It helps us serve without absorbing.
It helps us remain open without becoming depleted.

Protection Does Not Mean Closing the Heart

True protection does not make us hard.

It allows us to stay soft without being invaded.
It allows us to remain intuitive without being overwhelmed.
It allows us to care deeply without carrying what is not ours.

For the highly sensitive soul, protection is not a wall. It is a sacred boundary.

A remembrance that your energy is holy and worthy of care.

Guardian Herbs for Clearing, Protection and Blessings

There are plants that soften us.

There are plants that open the heart.

And then there are plants that have long been called upon as guardians.

Across many spiritual traditions, certain herbs, woods, resins and oils have been used for clearing, protection, purification and blessing. They were burned as smoke, infused into waters, carried as charms, placed at thresholds, used in ritual baths, anointing oils and sacred ceremonies.

These aromatic plants are allies for boundary, clarity and energetic strength.

For those who are highly sensitive, empathic, intuitive, or working closely with energy, it can sometimes feel as though there are no clear boundaries between ourselves and what is around us. We may feel the emotions of others too intensely and take them on, carrying what does not belong to us. We may absorb the atmosphere of a room. We may leave certain spaces feeling heavy, scattered or unlike ourselves.

This is why grounding and protection has always been a fundamental part of any spiritual practice for our energetic and psychic hygiene. It is not only about being safe, but also about maintaining clarity, vitality and sovereignty in our field.

A way of saying:

My energy is sacred.
My field is clear.
My spirit is sovereign.
Only what is aligned may remain.

What Are Guardian Plants?

What I call "Guardian Plants" are powerful plants traditionally used to clear stagnant energy, bless us and our spaces, cleanse and strengthen the aura, protect us and create a sacred boundary.

They are often used before ritual and energy healing work, before sleep, after intense emotional exchanges, when entering or leaving crowded spaces, to prepare and protect ourself from someone who drain our energy, or when creating a protected field for prayer, meditation and ceremony.

Some guardian herbs are fiery and cleansing.
Some are grounding and ancestral.
Some are devotional.
Some are sharp, clarifying and protective.
Together, they form a living language of energetic care.

The Sacred Oils, Plants and Resins Inside the Auric Shield Spray

I have created the Protection Auric Shield Spray from this tradition: a synergy of sacred herbs, resins, essential oils and vibrational essences, held in spring water, charged with the energies of the Moon and crystals.

PROTECTION Auric Shield Spray

was formulated to cleanse, purify, strengthen the energy field and create a shield of protection — especially for healers, energy workers, spiritual practitioners and highly sensitive people.

Sage

Sage has been revered in Indigenous North American traditions, as well as in Mediterranean and European folk practices, as one of the most powerful plants for purification and spiritual cleansing. Traditionally, it has been burned as sacred smoke in ceremonies to clear spaces, objects and the human energy field of stagnant or unwanted energies.

In many Indigenous traditions, Sage is used in ritual practices often referred to as smudging, where the smoke is intentionally guided around the body, through a space, or over sacred tools to restore balance and harmony. It is believed to carry prayers, clear negativity and create a clean energetic foundation before ceremony, healing work or spiritual practice.

Sage is often called upon at moments of transition — when entering a new home, beginning a new chapter, after illness, conflict or emotional intensity. It marks a threshold, helping to release what has been carried and to consciously step into a renewed state of clarity.

Its energy is direct, strong and uncompromising. It does not gently shift energy — it clears it. For this reason, Sage is often used at the beginning of a ritual, before softer or more devotional plants are introduced.

For sensitive people, Sage can be especially supportive when the energy feels heavy, overwhelming or unclear. It helps create a sense of spaciousness in the field, allowing the body and spirit to reset.

Palo Santo

Known by the Incas as the “Holy Tree,” Palo Santo, meaning “holy wood,” has long been used to purify the spirit and cleanse the energetic field. Its sacred smoke creates space for stillness, allowing the mind to soften and the flow of creativity to emerge naturally.

On an energetic, psychic and spiritual level, Palo Santo is a powerful ally for clearing, grounding and protection. It helps to restore and strengthen the auric field, removing stagnant or intrusive energies while bringing the body back into balance.

Where Sage can feel sharp and direct, Palo Santo carries a warmer, gentler quality. It is used to refresh the energy of a space, prepare for meditation, calm the spirit and bring the field back into harmony, inviting peace, blessing and softness.

Its presence imbues a deep sense of safety and self-empowerment. Rather than feeling open and exposed to external influences, Palo Santo supports you in standing in your own power — centred, aware and protected.

It reminds you that your energy is yours to tend. Through awareness, grounding and discipline, your field becomes strong and resilient. Nothing can breach your boundaries when you are rooted in yourself.

Hyssop

Hyssop has long been associated with purification, blessing and spiritual cleansing.

Traditionally, it has been used in ritual waters, cleansing practices and prayers of purification. Its energy is often connected with washing away what is heavy, restoring spiritual cleanliness and preparing the body or space for sacred work.

Hyssop is a beautiful ally when we are seeking not only to clear, but to consecrate — to make something sacred again.

Mugwort

Mugwort has long been known as the plant of the witches, the seers and the dreamers.

Across many traditions, it has been used by those who walk between worlds — midwives, healers, shamans and mystics — to support intuition, vision and connection to the unseen. It is a plant of thresholds, guiding us through the liminal spaces between waking and dreaming, body and spirit, known and unknown.

Mugwort has traditionally been burned, carried or placed beneath the pillow to enhance dreams, awaken psychic perception and protect the spirit during journeys beyond the ordinary state of consciousness. It is often associated with the moon, the feminine mysteries and the deep inner knowing that lives beneath logic.

In a protection blend, Mugwort does not simply shield — it sharpens awareness. It helps us sense subtle energies, trust our intuition and move through energetic spaces with clarity and discernment.

For those who are sensitive or working spiritually, Mugwort acts as both guide and guardian, reminding us that protection is not only about blocking what is outside, but also about strengthening our inner sight.

For spiritual workers, Mugwort is a guardian of the unseen.

Frankincense

Frankincense is one of the great temple resins.

Used for thousands of years in sacred rituals, prayer and purification, it carries a deeply devotional and elevating quality. Its resinous aroma has long been associated with blessing, sanctifying and creating sacred space.

Frankincense helps shift the atmosphere from ordinary to holy.

In energetic protection, it supports purification while also bringing the field into stillness, reverence and spiritual alignment.

Yarrow

Yarrow is a powerful guardian plant.

Traditionally, it has been associated with boundaries, courage, protection and energetic resilience. It is often considered an ally for those who are empathic or easily affected by the emotions and energies around them.

Yarrow teaches the sensitive soul that protection does not require hardness.

It helps us remain open-hearted while strengthening the edges of our field.

Copal

Copal is a sacred resin traditionally used in ceremony, offering and purification.

Its smoke has been used to cleanse spaces, honour the divine and carry prayers. It has a bright, sacred quality that helps clear density while inviting blessing and spiritual presence.

In a protection ritual, Copal acts like a bridge between clearing and devotion.

It does not only remove what is stagnant. It invites in what is sacred.

Cedarwood

Cedarwood is grounding, ancient and protective.

Traditionally used in cleansing, blessing and protection practices, Cedar carries the energy of the forest, the ancestor, the rooted one. It is steady, strengthening and deeply stabilising.

Where some herbs clear the upper field, Cedarwood helps bring protection into the body and the earth.

It is a beautiful ally for sensitive people who feel scattered, ungrounded or too open.

Rosemary

Rosemary has long been associated with protection, remembrance and purification.

Traditionally placed at thresholds, carried, burned or used in ritual waters, Rosemary is a bright and clarifying plant ally. It helps sharpen the mind, clear heaviness and protect the home or body from unwanted energies.

Rosemary reminds us to return to ourselves.

To remember who we are beneath the noise.

The Ritual

How to Use the Auric Shield Spray: the everyday and the ritual

Shake gently before use.

Mist around your body, especially around the crown, heart, shoulders, solar plexus and back of the neck.

You may also mist your room, altar, doorway, treatment space, meditation area, car or workspace.

As you spray, take three slow breaths and say:

“I cleanse my field. I call my energy back to me cleansed and in its purest, original form.

I am sealed in light, grounded in my body and protected in my spirit.

A Simple Guardian Herb Protection Ritual

Stand or sit with both feet on the ground.

Shake the bottle gently.

Mist above your head, around your body and behind your shoulders.

Imagine the mist forming a luminous field around you.

Place one hand on your heart and one hand on your belly.

Breathe slowly.

Say:

“Guardian plants, sacred resins, allies of protection,
cleanse what is heavy, clear what is not mine,
strengthen my field and bless my path.

I release what I have carried for others.
I return to my own centre.
I am protected, guided and clear.”

Pause for a moment.

Feel your body.
Feel the ground beneath you.
Feel the boundary of your own energy.

This is your field.
This is your space.
This is your centre.

The Protection Auric Shield Spray is a sacred ritual mist created with guardian herbs, sacred oils, resins and vibrational essences traditionally used for clearing, protection and blessings.
